Engine cutoff

Hello board,
I have a question concerning my 97 E420.
Over the past few days the car has had a idling problem.
It starts fine, runs fine. But while sitting in traffic or at a stop light my idle drops and the car cutoff. Any ideas. No codes or info. comes up on the display screen. I wonder if the battery is low or something else. I seem to be getting a surge in the idling also. My thougts would be bad gas, fuel filter, pump any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks

A little over 100,000. Is it a very major fix?
Or is it a major tune up job?
What causes this condition?
Can I replace the part?

you need to have the vehicle scanned.a good benz scanner should be able to gain access to the EA computer and see what is going on.

One more thing. My low warning fuel lamp is not working also.

I had a similar problem with my 97 E420. Car ran great, but at a stoplight the idle would kind of suddenly increase, then stumble and the motor would die. Would always start right up, but very annoying.

Bought an inexpensive code reader (Harbor Freight Tools) and found code P0100 indicating Mass Air Sensor. Ordered it from ******** AZ, ($268) installed it, and problem solved. Car idles steady, just like it should. Actually runs better too.

Kind of tricky to install, because it's mounted on the intake manifold down between the runners, and is hard to get at, just need to take your time.

Thanks, forum members.

Lacking codes I would consider the CPS before the MAF; in this instance I would first follow Mr Poole's advice personally.

I believe the OP stated "No codes or info. comes up on the display screen" which is why David Poole and I suggested getting the codes read, either at a dealer or with an inexpensive code reader first.

I would also think that if it were the CPS, the car wouldn't start intermittently.

Thanks
