Steering wheel cocked but car is in alignment.
Hello all,
I have recently rebuilt my steering box, it's wonderful to have power steering back! I installed the box and used the correct centering pin upon installation. However, I completley forgot to check the steering wheel when sliding the top steering box spline shaft onto the steering wheel coupling. Now the wheel is oriented incorrectly. I reallllly want to avoid having to rip the box out again to fix such a careless mistake. Is it possible to remove the steering wheel turn it a bit and bolt it back on to correct it? Thanks **1986 300E** |

I can tell you what I know about my 84 500SEL 126 body and it is probably the same for your 86 300E. You can't turn the steering wheel in relation to the steering shaft if you want your turn signals to cancel correctly. You will have to disconnect the steering shaft at the steering box and correct it there. Reinstall the centering bolt into the steering box to lock it. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering coupler at the box end. Remove the three box mounting bolts. Leave every thing else connected to the box. Slide the box off the coupling. The box won't fall off. Now turn the wheel to the straight position and lock it there some way. My Wife was kind enough to hold it for me. Slide the box back up onto the coupler. Replace all bolts, road test, and smile. I really hope this works for you so you. It's not as hard as it sounds. Paul

Thank you! This was what I feared
I guess I have some work cut out for me tommorow after work. I just feel like an idiot as I just had everything out, and getting that steering shaft coupling back on can be a bugger of a job since its sorta tight up in there. Also, thank you for informing me about the turn signal assembly being thrown off, that never even crossed my mind. Thanks again!
