Oil cooler damage

I own a CLK63AMG and was involved in an accident slightly damaging the oil cooler. What are the chances of metal filings/shavings from the inside of the cooler entering the oil supply to the engine and so cause damage? Does the oil first go through the filter before going back into the system or does it first go back to the sump(and the oil pump) before being filtered? What precautionary steps should I take (after fitting a new cooler, oil and filter), not to damage the engine?
