Help please! 1996 E230 Cruise Control Drop Out

Hi. Our 1996 E230 has recently developed a cruise control problem.
It drops out after about 1-2 kms at any set speed (without touching the brake etc). Want to DIY fix if possible. Local mechanic had a look at the break pedal and said that there are cables disappearing into the dash from the brake pedal arm and said he doesn't understand how it works ie cc break operation/switch. Have read many of the threads.
Have checked the bulbs and the brake lights etc - seems all ok. Have recently replaced the rear tyres to the correct size, the front are slightly smaller in diameter - would this affect the cc operation?
Is there anything else that I can do?
Thanks. Ed.
