Can Bad Motor Mounts Cause a Thumping from the Tire? 95 E320
On my last oil change, I discovered that the motor and transmission mounts on my 1995 E320 were worn out. Maybe coincidentally, I have noticed a slight thumping (like a small flat spot) coming from the left front tire. Are these two problems related?
Also, the rear diff is leaking (bushings)...is this imperative to repair right away?

Not if the leak is minor, and the fluid is kept full.

Bad motor mounts have NOTHING to do with tire wear or condition. That said, are you SURE that what you feel is a tire problem? Bad motor mounts can put so many nasty vibrations up into the car that you won't know whether you're scratching your watch or winding your butt until your watch quits working.
Treat these as two separate issues. If the motor mounts are bad the replace them and go from there. They need replacing anyway. If you know for sure that you have a tire problem then also correct that. You can't expect to fix one problem and correct the other. |

By chance, is the tire a Continental?

Tire is a Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring.
I was going to pursue a warranty claim on the tire since it only has 10K miles on it, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't definitely the motor mounts first. I will replace the motor/transmission mounts soon since it made such a difference on my 1998 E300. Thanks for the replies!

Most any brand tire can come up with a broken belt, although I've never seen a Michelin do this.

Look for a separation or bubble on your tire.

Waiting too long to rotate tires on a lowered car sets up all kinds of unusual vibrations. Rotating back does not cause them to go away

The answer to the question is actually yes, but the original poster is imagining the wrong thing.
Indeed a failed motor mount can cause vibrations (noise) that SOUND like a tire thump but which really aren't. It's more often noticeable when turning, as centrifugal force leans the motor more onto only one of the mounts. On a W124, turning can even cause vibration transmission caused by components in the heater box contacting the box. This, too, COULD be mistaken for tire noise.

Good to know...I will start with the mounts...I bet that is the source of the vibration/noise!
Thanks, everyone, as usual!
