W126 Steering column question

Dumb question -

On my "new" 560SEL, I have noticed that the steering wheel has about 1/2 to 3/4" play in the up-down direction

I can move it up, gravity takes it back down. Feels like something is loose.

Before I tear my dash apart, does anyone know off hand what could cause this and if it's just something I need to tighten or if something is shot?

Thanks!

Streering Column!

Up-Down not In-Out correct? There are two nuts underneath the instrument cluster which secure the upper part ofthe steering column to the dash frame. You would need to pull the instrument cluster and then get a socket on the nuts to tighten them up. Good Luck!

Awesome! Pulling the cluster is easy-pleasy.

I was deeply afraid that you were going to tell me that I need a new Gefrushticklushningdampfer or something like that

I'll bet this all ties into my ignition lock and safety switch issues......

Thanks!!

Yeah, you really are in luck, b/c the Gefrushticklushningdampfer is no longer available from Mercedes. I needed one about 18 months ago and had a devil of a time locating it.

Well, maybe I need a Gefrushticklushningdampfer after all. I checked those two bolts underneath the instrument cluster and they were quite snug. Yet, I still have up/down play in the wheel. Now, it's not as much as I had previously posted, I'd say it's really about 1/2 an inch. It also has about 1/2 inch side to side play. I don't mean turning, I mean moving the whole column side to side.

If I didn't already own a 126, I'd think it was normal but my 300SE has absolutely zero wiggle in the wheel.

I wonder what is going on..........
