John, have a PPI done by a MB-trained tech who knows that vintage MB automobile. Well known weaknesses on that vintage car are head gaskets and poor headlights. We own a 1992 300CE and it's still as tight as when it was new. The 104 engine in the 1992 revs higher at highway speeds than the newer 104 engines, and is not as responsive. Our 1995 E320 is much quicker and lower revving at highway speeds ... a more refined car. Having said that, the 300CE should have more power and handle better than your 300E. Carefully consider whether a 2-door coupe is going to suit your needs as well as a 4-door sedan.
