Leaky M117 power steering pump
Hi all,
I took the power steering pump out of my 5.0 M117 engine to replace the timing rail. This is the alloy body type with the fluid reservoir in the pump body. It was working well before I take it out but is very greasy. Do I just have to replace the front seal and the rear big O ring, or is there more I should look into? Also, the pulley rotates smoothly and there is no lateral play. But there is a 1 mm axial play when I pull/push on the pulley. Is this OK or should I do something about it? Thanks in advance! |

Generally on these pumps, it's the reservoir gasket (big O) that leaks, if anything, and you'll see the fluid on top of the housing down to the lines. If the front seal is leaking, the fluid is on the front and bottom. Also, if the front seal is bad, there is a possibility that the bearing is worn. From your discription, the bearing is OK. 1 mm axial play when you pull/push on the pulley is normal.
