So I thought I'd replace my diesel-sounding air pump (smog pump) for a quieter one. Trouble is that the airpump is secured in place by three primary bolts which come through from the back. I was able to completely loosen (but not remove) the one closest to the oil filter housing. The other 2 look almost impossible to reach. I'm hoping that I just don't see something obvious, but I'm confounded. Does the Alternator have to be removed from below? It looks like the oil filter housing must come off also. That's my next step, but it doesn't look like the last bolt is accessible in any way...help! please.
The patient is a '93 500E with 168 kmiles. Factory instruction show these bolts as mounting from the front.
Thanks,
Doug
