Phantom Oil LEAK AAHHHHH

Ok so my 88 260E has an oil leak! I think I have tracked it to the top rear of the motor. I know the timing chain cover leaks to but just a little. I can't see where the damn thing is leaking from. I thought maybe the oil filter but that is dry. could it be the back of the valve cover gasket?? It leaks down the back of the engine so at first I thought it was the rear main seal, but then I saw the trail coming from up top. I would like to find and fix it, but has anyone had any luck with an oil leak sealer, and if so could someone recomend a good sealer if there is one. I don't like to put additives in any of my motors, but this things bugging the Shiznit out of me.

How many miles on the car? Could very well be that the head gasket is starting to show it's age. On the M103 they will often start off by leaking oil and coolant out from the head and down the block. Have you measured your oil consumption? I would start off by cleaning all the oil off the engine block and then watching and monitoring where the oil appears to be coming from.

grab a telescopic mirror (a few $ at autozone), and look at the back of the head. probably it is leaking from there. it could be the valve cover gasket, or the head gasket....

cleaning the engine as mentioned above will help you pinpoint the exact location

good luck

Whatever you do, please do not pour any "mechanic in a can" into your MB; it deserves better than that.

Does your car have an oil cooler?
If so the seals where the oil pipes connect to the interface under the oil filter often get brittle and start to leak. It's a fiddly job.
If the oil is running down from the left side of the engine I would guess that this is your problem. If it's running down the right side then it's probably the head gasket.
