Engine harness (1992 W124 M104)

While removing the cylinder head (open thread here http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=263982), almost every connector on the upper engine wiring harness broke. The wires are somewhat pliable and the insulation seems ok, but the black tubing and connectors are very brittle. Any idea where to obtain a replacement harness and for about how much? Somewhere I read that they get upwards of $800 for this part. Is the Mercedes dealer really that proud of this part? What the...?!
