87 260E transmission slipping help...

Hi All,

My tranny seems to slip at highway speeds especially when on an uphill grade. During take-off from a full stop, no slippage. It slips intermittently when accelerating uphill or even at constant gas pedal pressure. Advise? Will I need a replacement or just an adjustment somewhere...

Thanks in advance...

ASSume fluid level is correct?

Under pressure the K2 clutch pack that locks up 4th gear can cause that issue.

fluid and tranny

Hi Doc,

The fluid is slightly over, could this cause it? If the K2 clutch pack causes the slipping, do I need a rebuild?

Thanks,

When was the last time it had the fluid completely changed and a new filter installed?

You need to baseline by changing the filter & fluid. Your tranny uses the cheap standard ATF anyway, won't cost you too much. Your problem may be cleared up afterwards, and if not, at least you'll rule out the fluid & filter.

Any updates on your problem? Did changing fluid and filter help?

I'm in this boat. I have the 87 TDT. Is that same tranny? Can't find spec in the fsm. What tranny is that? Its happened twice now, going up the same hill after about an hour of driving. It slipped and i barely made it up. Then stopped at top and it went. Going to change fluid and filter before driving more and see if that helps.

the high clutch has an O ring under the servo piston stay and it gets hard, ( special kit to fix ) causing a loss of fluid pressure that in turn causes slipping of the clutch and yes you will have to OH the unit to fix -- jz

87 E260

My E260 tranny just started slipping today as well. I've never had any problem with it why would it all of the sudden start? The fluid is ok.

Thanks for any suggestions,
E260

its a heat cycle thing every time you run the car to hot, and the O Rings get old they get HARD, and a hard o ring will allow oil pressure to by pass it when under pressure like a shifting point --

sorry but it needs a re do almost 99% of the time - you can change the oil and filter but its not likely it will help but you could try -- jz

Changing filter and tranny fluid -- look how milky

Check out these pics. The fluid is very milky. Is that normal or is coolant getting in there? It also smells a bit burnt.

What do you think of this fluid? My tranny slipped only after giving it a good hard run a couple times.

Well, after about 1000 miles on new oil and filter the trans hasn't slipped. I drove it a long while around town and pretty hard the other day and it is doing good. Maybe the fluid was really old. I use the Valvoline dex/merc high mileage stuff.
