C280 '96 Ignition Tumbler inquiry
Hello All,
I have a '96 C280 and started having trouble with getting the key to turn when placed in the ignition. I had my brother (who is mechanically inclined) check it out, and, he said it was more than likely the "ignition tumbler" that needed to be replaced. I called my mechanic (whom I've been going to for 20 years and only works on BMW's, Porsches & Benz') explained the situation, and was told to order a new one from the dealership. So, I did exactly that and took it to my mechanic when it arrived. After an hour or so, they realized they didn't have the correct tool to replace it - he did some research online, showed me the tool that was needed and, said to call him in a couple of days (assuming they would need that time to get the tool). When I called back, he told me "I can't get that tool, it's not available so, you'll probably have to have the dealership do it". I'm curious to know, is the "tool" for dealership use only and, not available for independent mechanics/auto shops to purchase for their business?
If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, in advance!
