Stupid question - the oil pan doesn't have a drain plug? EPC shows one at the bottom rear of the pan...

I'd unscrew the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan, but that's just me. Remember there's an oil filter that needs to be replaced as well. It's a round canister thingy that spins on to the engine block. You must refill the engine with new oil while you are at it, be sure to use the right amount and don't overfill. Be sure and do all of this while the engine is still relatively hot so all of the oil will drain out.

It's really not much different than changing the oil on most vehicles. Take a look under the car to locate the oil pan. Once you locate that, the drain plug is at the rear of the pan. It requires a 13mm wrench. Simply unthread the plug to drain the oil and while that is draining replace the oil filter.
The oil filter is a cartridge type. When looking at the engine from the front of the vehicle, the oil filter housing is on the left near the front of the engine beneath the passenger side exhaust manifold. The cap requires a 13mm wrench to remove the bolt that secures it. Remove the cap and filter, replace the two rubber O-rings on the cap, install the new filter, and re-install the cap. Then put the oil drain plug back in and fill the engine with the recommended amount of oil. The most difficult part for me is getting the cap back on the filter housing. Last time I changed the oil in my 140 it took me about an hour just to get that back on. Last edited by Mercedes Guy; 11-30-2009 at 09:23 PM. |

I didn't mean his question was stupid, I thought *I* might be asking a stupid question, since the OP considered sucking it out of the filler a common practice; I honestly didn't know if he had a drain plug on his pan or not (though I assumed he did, which is why I thought it might be a stupid question).

He may not be seeing it because of the plastic belly pan or whatever its called. I've never been underneath a W140 but I imagine it has one just like a late W126 and W124.

That's a possibility. The majority of my experience with the W140s is with the later models. I thought I read somewhere that the early W140s had the belly pans but that feature was eventually eliminated. I'm sure some people also took them off and never put them back on. I know that the late W140s didn't come with them, though.

Oil change
benzo
I have a '91 420 SEL. Same engine except for displacment. No plastic shield. In the filter "kit" you will find a larger rubber O-Ring. That goes under the oil filter housing cap. A small aluminum washer. That goes under the oil filter housing bolt. And a copper O-Ring. It doesn't go anywhere. A whole bunch-a-benzes use the same filter. It goes on one of them. Mine takes 6 1/2 quarts to fill. Good luck. |
