You picked one of the hardest cars to remove the P/S pump.

The pump is bolted thru the back of the bracket, SO you have to remove that complete bracket.

Yes, this is a pain. There are two allen bolts that come from behind. To get them out, you'll need a u-joint and like 36" of extension on a ratchet. I'm not kidding. I had my ratchet way back beside the transmission, trying to get those 2 bolts out. The two bolts are hard to see, and you're not going to be able to get your hand up there to feel them. It's just patience. Once those are out, the rest is straight forward and the pump comes out easily.

Before you remove it, make sure your low pressure line from the reservoir to the pump isn't what's leaking.

Encouragement: I removed my pump, and rebuilt it myself using one of the gasket kits for like $60. The rebuilding part is easy. That was about a year ago and I haven't leaked a DROP of fluid since! Yay for when things actually work.

Good luck

On my 93 400E, they were 13 mm bolts-not Allen bolts. I didn't have to remove the a/c compressor, but to get to the two mount bolts, I had to remove the front left exhaust manifold elbow. If I recall, I could get to the 10 mm bolts from the top of the engine compartment with a 1/4" ratchet and a few short extensions. It sure gives your fingers a workout.

Do you really need to pull the whole pump and bracket off? The radial seal is what usually hardens and leaks. That can be changed by removing only the front part of the pump. The seal kit only costs about $25 from the dealer.

Well going to try again today.Pump looks like it is leaking in back.Just can not see anything but a small portion of the rear of the pump.
So if i remove the front of the pump on the car, won't other parts fall out.
Thanks
Rich

Here's a photo DIY on how to get the pump off and overhaul it. It came from a W140 forum, but it is the same M119 engine you have in your car. I just replaced my pump using this procedure as a guide for removal and it works well. And yes, those back two bolts are a major pain to get off and back on!

There are six 13 mm bolts holding the front of the pump to the car. I just changed the radial seal on my E420 a few months ago and it took about an hour. I took detailed pictures but they were such high-resolution that I can't post them here. It's so much easier just to pull the front off than to get to the two bolts in back. But if it's the short 2" hose between the reservoir and the pump, you may have no choice. Most of the time, I think it is the radial seal that hardens and leaks and that can be done with the front off only. Send me a PM if you want me to e-mail the pictures (presuming you haven't already completed the job).

Well, just to catch up i got the pump off. There was 2 hex head bolts in back and one 13mm in front.Did not have to pull off the ac compressor but had to remove plastic ducting that cool's off drivers side motor mount .there was some other plastic stuff to take off but then i could see the back of the p.s. pump.Kind of.Ordered all new p.s. hose as some leak was from hose.Which one???Hard to tell. Now most of the leak was from from the pump.
emerydc8==was right in that taking off only front of pump would have been the right thing to try first.Fast.easy and cheap. If it still leaked then take off pump,do short hose and whatever else. Thanks to all so far for the help
