low oil warning lamp in dash

I was reading in the owners manual on 91 190E. It says that the light should illuminate in the no. 2 position on the ignition switch. It should then extinguish after the engine starts. This is if it has the correct amount of oil in the engine. Mine doesn't work or come on in the no. 2 position. My question is what might be the issue here or where would I want to check first? All the other warning lamps seem to work the way they should.

be careful
if it is because your oil pump is failing
it could mean your engine could seize at any moment
(Or are you speaking of your oil level, not pressure, indicator? If that is the case just use the old fashion "check your dip stick" will suffice)

I think it just kind of monitors the oil level in the pan. It say it is supposed to activate when the level is approximately 2 quarts low on oil, I believe. The oil pressure gauge seems to be working fine. I thought when I change oil here pretty soon with it. I would turn it to position #2 with the oil drained to see if then it comes on or not?
