W123 fuel system

HI all,
sorry for this rather simple question. I just changed the fuel hoses of my W123 200E because they were leaking and it smelled pretty badly.
Everything went well. however, the car does not start anymore.
And now, I just noticed that there is another little hose which is broken and where gasoline is leaking... I am not sure what the parts are called and what function they have. but it seems that this might have been the cause for the smell.
does anybody know if this is a reason for the car not starting and what function the little hose has? It goes back to the point where the incoming fuel hose comes in.
Any answer would be helpful.
Thanks a lot.
