W210 door lock

Having problems opening the car via the key and the electronic door handle on my '97 E420. I have changed the batteries in the "key" and its seems to work fine pointed at the front windshield. I have notice that the door handle "window" for the lock and the trunk lock has gotten "faded" and I am thinking this may be the cause.

Has anyone repaired/replaced these before and if so has some sort of DIY fix that I can do? Maybe some 2000 grit wet sandpaper will bring back some of the clearness to the thing?

Thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem on my 97 e300d. All other locks work, but the driver door does not. I looked up the price for a new sensor($800).
I hope someone can help.

Do you have to get a new IR receiver from Mercedes or can I get one off another car in the salvage yard?

It now has a hole in it....

The receiver does not have any "smarts" in it so swapping will be easy. Also have a look at a similar year C class, they have the same door handles from what I've seen. ( I'm not sure if other models are the same )

Bump.....does anyone have anymore input?

Went to a salvage yard but all they had were W210 320's and no IR receivers.
What year were these receivers installed in the cars? I thought they are only '97 and '98 but am not sure. Do I have to buy one from the stealership at $500?

Anyone have one out there?

I know on the C280 W202, 97 was the first year for IR on the drivers door so I'd say the E320 W210 is the same ( and they deleted the mechanical lock)

Did you get an actual price from the dealer or are you one of those people whom use that term without any basis?

Got pricing from the MB dealer and they also said that I would have to by from them as they would have to "coordinate" with my key fob.

Ok, I found a IR door receiver. It looks like it has a screw/bolt on the inside for mounting, however I took the door panel off and don't see a way into the area I need without taking the door latch parts off.

Does anyone have a procedure for this? I have checked the search but don't find anything of value there. I need some educated help.
