Question C-280 Battery

Removing the caps on my battery (1999 C-280) I find the acid level below the plates. Is there any harm in topping up with distilled water? Is this supposed to be a maintenance free battery?

If that is still a MB original battery then it is a LOW maintenance battery, in other words ADD water every 6 months or so.
