hello, thre is a mini type fan behind the glove compartment guts, its making loud screatching noises, sounds like its got a bad ball bearing, its in a plastic housing with 2 rubber tubes coming from it,it was being very annoying so i jambed a stick in it to stop it,does anyone know why there is a mini barrel style fan built in the passengers side dashboard, behind the glove box area? i know mercedes items all serve there purpose, but what the hell could this 1 be for??,any help will be awesome.

That fan draws an air sample from the vent near the rear view mirror so the Climate Control Unit knows the passenger compartment temperature. If you stop the sensor fan the CCU will not function properly.

ok so since then i removed the fan,are you trying to tell me the fan blows air over that sensor on the dome light?,does this tell the ac/system when to shut when swtitched to auto.cuz my ac/heating never shuts off when i switch it to auto.also no matter what button i push air flow from all vents

The fan draws/sucks in air at the rear view mirror grille. A test to see if the fan is functioning is to place a 1" square piece of paper near the grille and see if it gets sucked toward the grille.

A recent thread discussed disassembling and lubricating that sample fan to eliminate noisy operation. Never done it myself so I can't comment on the degree of difficulty, but you definitely want to repair/replace your fan ASAP so the Climate Control System works properly.
