SRS comes on when brake peddel pressed

1990 300E 2.6

I start the car, and there are no lights on the dashboard.

I press the brake pedal and the SRS light comes on and stays on. (The steering wheel is not turned.)

There is no other symptoms.

Thanks for the help.

I've read elsewhere that the primary function of the SRS light in a 1990 is to suggest the airbag is OK. Mine situation seems to suggest there is more to the SRS light. Seems to have some relation with the Brake system.

The warning light sockets can be put in to the back of the cluster in the wrong hole. I am wondering if someone assembled your cluster wrong at some point. What would make sense is the SRS light has the socket installed for the exterior lamp failure. Easy check would be to make sure all 3 of your brake lights are working and go from there.

Another item you may wish to check is the battery. A number of years ago a weak battery in my 201 was causing the SRS light to illuminate. When I put in a new battery the issue never re-surfaced. It is unusual, though, that it is coming on as soon as you press the brake pedal. Gilly makes a good point that it seems to be acting like the lamp failure indicator. Anyway, I just thought I'd throw the battery idea out there.

I third the brake failure option. Third brake light being the culprit.

Previous owner probably switched the bulbs to pass an inspection.

Oh - you are so good

Yes, there is a brake light out, and YES I (as in Me) have had the cluster out.

You are soo good team.

I will fix the light and switch the cluster bulbs.

Wow - not only do you guys know the cars and the functions - but you understand the errors people do.

There are small number tags on the small warning light sockets, the small individual ones, there are corresponding numbers stamped into the metal next to the holes.
Don't feel bad, I used to work on them and I know I did that a few times too.
