Pre-Oil

1984 500 SEL been sitting/garaged for over a year without starting/moving.

At this point I have rebuilt the suspension etc;.

My question is:

Is there any way to pre-lube the engine prior to start up. I knew the old 350 Chevy u could spin the oil pump through the distributor hole.

I hate like heck to start this with it dry.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

God Bless

John

If it's been less than 2 years nothing is really needed. Unless it has dirty oil, then change it. And if you want to go the extra mile probably pull the main coil wire, and crank it for 10-15 seconds, then reconnect and start.

Yes

Disconnect the coil wire and fuel pump relay/fuse (whichever is easier) and spin the engine so it doesn't fire and dump fuel into the cylinders. That'll pre-lube it...then just put it back together and fire it up...luck!

If you want to take more load of then remove the spark-plugs. You will have less pressure on your bearings and it will be cranking faster at the same time.
I am not familiar with the engine but if it has a mechanical oil pressure gauge you should see the pressure build up pretty good with the obtained starter motor cranking speed and the plugs out.

Good luck j

Since when is the tip of the plug getting blasted with oil or holding it back!?!?!? It is perfectly safe to take out the spark plugs and crank the engine.

Agreed... nothing wrong with removing the plugs. If you just fire it right up- there is still oil between the brgs due to surface tension. Just don't rev the motor until a minute after the oil pressure comes up!

Thank you for the support on behalf of my 0.02 cnts.
May be I caused confusion by not first agreeing with the disconnecting of fuel pump / injectors and ignition system.
I also agree that the bearings probably would be fine anyways but sometimes you want to be extra carefull with unknown factors especially if it is your own baby.

I think I would actually put a little oil into each plug hole, turn it over once by wrench from the crank pulley and leave it a few hours before doing anything else. The ring area will be last to get get relubed by the oil pump, so this will help with that. It might increase the smoke on startup, but that also increases the dramatic effect of the engine rebirth (esp. if you play Ride of the Valkyries at high volume).
