'94 E320 wagon- Transmission Question

Ocassionally, my transmission will slip and surge (but mostly slip) when shifting from 3rd to 4th on my automatic transmission. However, it seems to me that this problem should happen all of the time, and not just intermittently if there is a problem with the gears or synchros. Could it be some other problem with the tranny? Or will a rebuild fix this problem?
Thanks!
John

Most likely a "sealing" issue in the 4th gear clutch pack.
