Caring for your Benz with the double bulkhead firewall.

While changing the oil on the truck today, I was looking for some small task to fill the time while waiting for all of the oil to drain out of the pan. I opened the hood on the E300 to give it a look over and I noticed a fair bit of debris had accumulated in the space between the two firewalls.

I pulled out my trusty grabbers and went to work.

This is the pile I got from the driver's side:

This is the pile I got from the passenger's side:

Including this lovely field mouse nest:

All of this was fairly surprising since the car is parked inside 99% of the time. Also, the way the bulkhead is designed, it makes you wonder how anything gets in there at all.

Check your own out. The bottom of the compartment is metal and the accumulation of mess in there could lead to rust and plugged drains.

Was it a mouse nest?

I remember from my old job that Napa sells them for like $2. I've considered putting fiberglass or metal window screen over those areas to keep gunk out.

I picked up the tool at Lowes since that's where I happened to be at the time. It was like, twice as much as H-F but it's more robust.

Removing the battery and sending the small shop-vac tube under the HVAC blower housing will also yield many leaves etc. Then a hose, lots of water, and keep the drains clear until it's all gone.
