Check the oil for "milkshake" which indicates water in the oil and a bad gasket. Ditto for the coolant, if there is any left, check for oil in it.
I am not so sure about those engines having a head gasket issue. The radiators have a bad reputation for the hose nipple breaking off. There is a kit to fix it, but I would just get a new radiator. Actually I would get the kit then see if the car runs properly before buying a new radiator. Here is a picture of the kit - I do not know if Phil sell these too, you should ask him, if not google mercedes radiator repair kit
