touch shift in 2002 SLK320 making clunking noise

When shifting from park through Reverse, Neutral, and into Drive it is making a loose rattling noise and it feels like something is disconnected. All is working alright including the touch shift function. any ideas? I removed the trim around the shifter and realised it is a single unit. does the top of the unit seperate. has anyone had this issue?

you may want to check the flex discs in the drive shaft, and if you suspect its the tranny a nice bottle of lucas tranny conditioner works wonders.

After further inspection it is the bushing between the gear selector and the shifter linkage. ordered from peachparts for a whopping $1.44!
