Waterpump Emergency

So the water pump on my '95 E320 wagon died. I got a new one and after I installed it I noticed something different. Attached is a picture of the old pump, which has a third, sensor. The large, round, black, two-pin closest to my index finger. The new pump has this area sealed shut so this sensor cannot be installed. What does that mean? Wrong pump (how can that be?) or maybe its not needed?

Wrong pump. Those sensors are for the dash gauge and the climate control or engine temp monitoring.

I guess so. it just seems weird that a pump exists that perfectly fits the engine but is missing a critical part. so does that mean that there are E320s that don't use this part? and if so how is it that that 320 can operate without it and mine can't? its just weird to me. anyway, I guess I have to order a new one.

There may be a difference in early M104 / late M104 water pumps that the place that sold you that pump neglected to notice. It's pretty common throughout the years on these cars. Parts may fit physically but there are other slight differences.....

Recommend buying a rebuilt water pump from your local MB dealer. Their Parts Department will order it based on your VIN to be sure you get the correct one.

There was a mid-year change in '95 on the M104 cars, I know that the wire harness is different as is the belt tensioner, ... not sure about the water pump. Call the number above and have your VIN nearby.

The newer pups use the single 4-prong/4-blade sensors.

You can just return the pump for the correct one.
