The EZL needs a good thermal contact with the body. The factory part has a layer of toxic white goo to provide it.

For longer life on your used unit be sure to replace the goo. I don't think it can be purchased, as I never tried. Radio Shack sells a suitable dialetric conductive paste.

PS. and for your longevity, be sure to wash well after getting that crud all over your hands.

Great clinic on the EZL. The pull n' pay cars have the batteries removed so
getting to the EZL and other computers, OVP,etc..is a snap with simple handtools.. I found a pristine 91' 40K 190e 2.6 that had "Died"from a rear 1/4 accident.. got all the electronic stuff for 45$ and a hour of labor ..

That's much cheaper than the dealership, ebay or a private party in my
book , even if these units don't work the loss was nominal. If they do
work, I have saved a bunch of money ....

Yes, that is all good advice too... I'm glad you brought that up.
One thing though, I'm not sure that the stuff from "The Shack" is up to the harsh conditions of under hood automotive use. There are other sources for stuff that may be better suited to our needs. Try your local "real" auto parts store (not a "McParts" store).
Regards, Eric

Does that white stuff act as a heat sink only.

Helps transfer the heat to the surrounding metal, like a heat conductor.

I thought it was just ordinary thermal grease, the same that stuffs that you put between your computer CPU and the heat sink/fan to dissipate heat.

It is white thermal paste just like cpu paste and can be bought at radio shack for about 5-10 dollars.
