W124 fuel and running issue.

So I've come to the conclusion I have a problem.

My 88 300E currently gets 300ks to a tank, 400 if im lucky. doing the maths, considering I do mainly highway driving, I should be getting much better.

I have replaced the fuel pump relay, as the car has trouble starting (usually starts second time with the gas pedal down a tad)

I also know the car i running a little rough, oil pressure low when under around 10km hr.

Any ideas? What are the prone areas in the fuel system as failure pouints? It cant be anything major leaking as I can't smell fuel!.

Any info is appreciated.

Cheers,
Luke...
a confused mercedes owner...

So. How long is a piece of string.

How many K's on the car?
Have you changed the obvious - Distributor cap, leads, rotor and plugs?
Do you have a hot start problem or a cold start problem?
Have you changed the fuel filters recently - front and rear?
Hot start problems can be attributed to the fuel accumulator back where the fuel pumps are.
Hard and leaking vacuum pipes can cause rough running and idling.
If you are in Melbourne you can take the car to a Bosch fuel injection specialist and for a AU$130.00 they will do a diagnostic on your car.

Luke, when were the distributor cap, distributor rotor and spark plugs changed last? Spark plugs should be changed every 30,000 miles, and the cap & rotor at least inspected, if not replaced. If the ignition wires are original there's a good chance they need replacing also.

The stubborn starts are likely caused by the fuel injectors not holding pressure when the engine sits for a few hours or overnight ... not a show stopper.

I would suspect the ignition system parts as the root cause of your poor gas mileage.

im having the same trouble in my 86 300e. mine has 126k on it and is idling rough and it starts on the second or third crank...

a mechanic at my work had said that to clean out the throtle body and everything start the car get a can of sea foam and disconnect the vaume hose. let the hose suck the sea foam right out of the bottle.....

wanted to get a second opinion before i try this.

has 300k on the clock.
I have only had the car for the past 2k of driving. Changing plugs does nothing, i think its acctually misfiring.

Took it to a mechanic today only to have him say
"Well, they're a very poorly built model of mercedes"
to which I replied
"so poorly built that the engine is technically as advanced as a brand new commodore like the one you drive over there?"

He s******ed, and i drove off. Alas, a decent mechanic in Warrnambool, or Victoria is a very rare thing.

I haven't changed anything on it, and the start issue is a cold start, seeing as i mentioned it sits overnight...

cheers.

Most misfiring faults are electrical.
Since you have changed plugs and with 300KKs on the engine I would be looking at distibutor cap, leads and rotor button - all expensive items

If you have a multimeter you can check the leads. They should read 1000ohms end to end +/- 50 - 100 ohms. Check the distributor cap for cracks or moisture. (With all the wet weather you had in Warrnambool over the last couple of days (could be having an effect).

There is a very good independent M.B. expert in Geelong - I'll find out his name and P.M. you.

I would be more worried about the lack of oil pressure while driving...you need to figure that out first. Get a gauge and make sure it is not the cluster reading wrong.
