Water Temp Sensor 4 Pin Connector config?

Hey Guys, I put on a new Water temp sensor on my 91 300E. Fits fine but I;m not sure how to configure the pins on top of it with the connector. The Sensor just has 4 pins and are not numbered like the sensor cap. How do I know if this things on right? And what is that ticking noise that comes and goes from the back of the engine near the firewall? It's not always there. Thanks for your help again! If I get this thing running right, it's getting a paint job, tinted windows, and stero system baby!!! Oh, and some new seat covers after I pad the old ones up. Everything else works on this baby.
