I did a couple tests on my 350 when it still had the DOT lights. The wipers would clear a good bit of the glass, about 3/4 of it. Not as effective as the euro lights / wipers, but still a help.

The pressure on the wiper blade itself is about the same between DOT and euro wipers.

The reason for headlight wipers is not only winter safety, but a global market. In some Northern European countries (you know the type that breeds rally drivers?) they mandate headlight wipers because in the winter the snow piles up on the headlights, and as it melts the roads get so muddy during a normal trip that the headlights require cleaning. This is why you'll also see it on Saabs and Volvos. I can't remember specifically what countries require this.

I replaced the little wiper blades on my 300E this year. Before winter I need to get the nozzles spraying again too....they are plugged up.

Do your wipers work? Did you fix them or did they always work? Where did you get the blades for them? LOL!

Didn't read all of the posts...

But I'm pretty sure the wipers on the headlights of my 300E worked when the regular wiper was engaged...

I've heard that in Europe the roads can be a mess and many cars of the time had wipers on the lights as a safety issue...I'm sure muddy headlights create a safety hazard...

In America...I'd assume most of the roads MBs travel on are well paved and not exactly wrought with soil and such...so they might seem unnecessary...

But during the winter they seemed to come in handy to keep the ice and snow from adhering to the lights while I drove...the boxy and slightly inset seeming nature of the lights on the 300E really facilitated snow/ice build-up

I always thought the wipers were cool...but I really liked the heated fluid reservoir...

I got the blades for mine out of the trash bin at the local McParts store. Only specific ones fit, it's best to take the old blade with you to compare. Nothing on the shelves was close.

For my headlamp wiper blade replacements, I simply use an old windshield wiper blade, cut to size. You're not looking through that glass and I have found they are quite good enough for that purpose, even in a used state.

For eight dollars, why sort through trash?

Speaking of which, I ordered a set of replacement inserts and can't figure how to remove the old ones? Tips anyone?

When I checked they were almost $20 each. I wasn't going to pay $20 for a 4" wiper blade.

Oh nooo....I didn't have that serious of a back surgery. Just a degenerative disk issue that caused serious lower back pain and made my right leg numb and non functioning. It is getting better quickly. I just have to be careful.

Anyway, what is the easiest way to remove and repalce these headlight wiper motors? Anyone done this?

Hope it wasn't major surgery and that you are healing well.
I survived a 5 level cervical fusion 4/2004. (C4,5,6,7,T1) 10 screws, 2 rods and 0 pain.

I'll attest to the worth of the wipers. Just the ticket on a long drive thru PA. I think they add mud to the salt for "patina".
On another note do any of you have a weeping washer nozzle? My left front will drain the res in about three weeks and leaves a blue residue on the bumper. Is there a one way valvle in the system?

Thanks

P.S. Anyone looked into laser back surgery?

They are attached to the bottom of the headlight assembly. Take them out together. As I recall 8mm bolts hold them all together.
