Not much progress recently, as I have been studying, and keeping the fleet moving..
My Daughter is not needing the car until next year, so no hurry now, so been doing other stuff! Just seems that something is always going wrong or to do recently... Here is my list of achievments/distractions, in case anyone thinks I am being lazy! Rebuilt a Subaru Outback Boxer Motor. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...u/DSC01442.jpg Rebuilt the top end, brakes and suspension of my Jeep 5.9. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/DSC02054.jpg Removed and replaced Jeep Cherokee AW4 Transmision. This is what you dread finding after you get the thing towed home.. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/IMG_4813.jpg Built a 4.6 stroker Jeep Motor. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/DSC01358.jpg Went to Hawaii..:D http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/DSC02101.jpg Had Family visit.. Began to polish my Airstream Motorhome... http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_4834.jpg Watch this space.... |
My goodness! You've been incredibly busy.
|
Summer is coming and maybe my Daughter will get her car if I ever finish her to my satisfaction!
Some of you may have seen I have been working on my 190D, trying to get it running and driving better, as well as diagnosis of the non functional A/C. Finally got the GF's Range Rover suspension dialed as well as replacing the fuel pump.. Other projects under way are a TH400 transmission rebuild for my Suburban... http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...y/IMG_5500.jpg And the Airstream is coming along... The polishing was kinda a priority because I had a leak inside from one of the metal seams... had to polish it before i could seal the joints! For those of you who might enjoy an update... Roof polishing progress... Before... Note the bad seam joint which I carefully dressed down.. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_5041.jpg Part done... http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_5043.jpg http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_5042.jpg http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_5044.jpg Done, but he main roof panel will be painted white, to reflect the heat, so not polishing it. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_5046.jpg So the rear cap is pretty much done, and hopefully leak free.. Polished and mounted the marker lamps, converted them to LED's, and made a neat little beauty cover for the rearview camera.. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_5114.jpg http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_5067.jpg http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_5078.jpg Started to do the front too, resealing the joints and window seams as I go. Hopefully one day I will meet in the middle! http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/IMG_5074.jpg Just didnt want you you guys to think I have been sleeping... |
Anyway, back to Peachy..
Fitted the Bilstien Comfort struts, bump stops, and replaced the Strut mounts. Checked all the suspension bushes, brakes and cleaned down the wheel arches while I was there... will take some pictures next time I have the wheels off! Not sure if I mentioned I drained and flushed the coolant and power steering system, as well as the fuel filter. So now aside from the brake fluid, rear axle oil, which I will do when the front end is done, every fluid and filter is new! Noticed that the receiver/dryer is leaking from the sight glass! First time I spotted a puddle of fluid in the glass, I thought I had dropped some fluid there... Anyone ever seen that before? http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...IMG_5532-1.jpg Lucky I have my Snap-on A/C recovery and charge machine to grab whats left of the R12 when I replace the Dryer. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/DSC01573.jpg Guess that might explain why it was low on charge when I got it! |
New parts that arrived, and aside from the Receiver/Drier, they are all on now.
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5580.jpg The side mirror base seals were badly cracked... Not available seperately, so I looked at the junkyard, and found a pair that looked great! Before... http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5593.jpg Removed... http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5594.jpg After.. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5597.jpg http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5596.jpg Kinda puzzled by this little toggle switch in the glovebox.. Has 3 positions, but no idea what it does.. I think there maybe an aftermarket alarm fitted, but no idea where! http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5588.jpg |
Power Steering is done...
Before.. Yuk! http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5584.jpg Mitivac to the rescue! http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5601.jpg New filter.. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5602.jpg Nice and clean! http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...c/IMG_5603.jpg |
This Power steering deal is frustrating...
I have put 6 quarts thru the thing now and still its turning brown when I run the car! |

Here are the pics of the Bilstiens, and stuff.
Gotta love California cars...A quick wipe down, and... Look at the underside of these wheel arches on a 22 year old car! Drivers side.. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...j/Merc/001.jpg http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...j/Merc/002.jpg http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...j/Merc/003.jpg Pass side... http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...j/Merc/005.jpg |
Looks great! I'm a sucker for clean wheel wells too :o
|
Note the scuff mark on the Pass side inner wheel well...
Result of bad shocks and disintigrated bump stops! |
So, whilst doing the PS flush I noticed the serpentine belt was showing signs of cracking...
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...Merc/001-1.jpg So put the new Conti belt on... What a pig of a job to do... The manual says to remove the Fan clutch.... but I could not find a allen wrench, socket or key that was short enough to go between the bolt and the radiator... so tight is this motor in the 201 chassis! I ended up doing the job without removing the fan... tricky, but I got there! I also did the replacement AC dryer... http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...Merc/002-1.jpg Done... Nice to have a sight glass that is not leaking and now I can see the freon! http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...Merc/003-1.jpg |
Getting ready to smog....
I think I already mentioned that I have replaced all of the ignition stuff, plugs, wires, cap and rotor because they were bad when I got it. Did the idle hoses and checked we are getting a good vacuum. When my son, Ps2cho was back in town last week, we checked the fuel pump output and that came up good at 1.2L in 40 seconds. We also checked the output at the injector lines from the Fuel Distriibutor at idle and WOT, and they came out well within spec and within 1gram across all 6! I did have a Check Engine light on.... I assumed it was because I had disconnected the intake temp sensor and forgot to connect it when i ran the car, but upon checking the codes for the first time I discovered a code 7, 10, and 27. I thought that was interesting, because when i bought it, the distributor cap, rotor and EZL was disconnected... and the codes in the memory were.. 7= TNA/TD signal (RPM) read by CFI control module 10= Throttle position switch - closed throttle position fault (idle) 27= Data exchange between CFI control module and ignition control module interrupted I reset them. Lets see if they return when the car is run for a bit! |
