All wagon owners please help

How much 'bounce' does your car have if you push down on the tailgate. I get about 2" before it feels like I hit a bumper which I know isn't happening.

I'm wondering if my auto-level is set too light and is engaging too early.

Thanks

Hmmmm,

I push down and don't hit anything. Dunno what to tell you except check your rear shocks/struts for fluid leaks.

Good luck!

BTW, I have a 1998 E320 4matic wagon.

What series wagon do you have. Are you saying that you can only push the car down 2 inches, then it feels like it's hitting something? Also is the car running. I own a '83 TD and am not aware of a firmness setting that you can adjust. If the back end is bouncy then the problem is the accumulators.

It's 1998 E320 with new accumulators. The car IS NOT a soft ride. I'm talking about the old-fashioned bounce test one would do to test a shock absorber. Only I open the hatch and sit on the tail gate and bounce it up and down.
As long as I don't get the back end 'rocking" up and down too much the car bounces smoothly. But when I push down too hard the shocks seem to get firm all of a sudden at that spot about 2" below level. AS SOON as I reduce the amplitude of the bounce it's OK. BTW, this is with the car running.
