Problem with high beams and dash lights

Hi all,

I have a 1995 e320 wagon and I was having a problem with the high beams coming on where sometimes instead of coming on they would leave me in darkness. No high beams, no low beams. What you could do is actuate the lever more than once and they would come on. You always have the low beams to fall back on but it is pretty invigorating to have no lights for a moment or two. This has progressed to no high beams at all and as an extra bonus no dashlights. Low beams work fine. Is this and issue with the high beam switch worth taking apart the steering stuff to either replace or clean it up? Are the dash lights on the same circuit? I have not checked the fuses but if one is wasted I still need to know why and what I can do about it.

Any likely suspects you all could help me round up?

Thanks very much,
Jim Lee

Try and get a replacement stalk from a junk yard as they dont go bad very often. Also try and get the headlight relay/bulb out indicator because if the bulb out indicator didnt come on when the high beams didnt come on then could be that unit since it controls all exterior lights. The relay is the longest relay under the screwed down cover behind the fuses. I am not sure about the dash lights but you could check behind the dash ground wires for corrosion and the dimmer switch just in case.

My guess is that the dimmer switch went bad, and eventually took out a fuse. Check fuses, if one is out then replace the fuse and the dimmer switch.

If you buy a used stalk/switch, plug it in and try it before going through the replaement procedure (which includes pulling the steering wheel).

Similar problem 92 SL

The headlight switch is worn, doesn't have a good click-action to it; not sure if it's the problem. Tonight high and low beams were dead, tried turning the switch through the ranges a few times and apparently something took a fuse out; no dash lights or right side lights. Swapped fuse, fixed that problem, but still no high or low beams! What should I be looking for?
