update on smokin'

as everyone knows the queens' 88 560sel is smokin from the tailpipe when on an incline and idling.

took to local indy in Austin, Tx and replaced PCV valve....Robert, the owner/mechanic, said the intake is all clogged with carbon I guess....so that is a big job...

anyone know about cleaning the carbon out without taking the intake apart and replacing gaskets and doing that job?

lyle

Lyle, ask the indy how the intake would get clogged with carbon. That possibilty sounds odd to me.

X2

Lyle - did you check the exhaust (as suggested in your other thread) for the small hole?

Did replacing the PCV stop the smoking?

Do it like they clean carbon from jet engines

Wind it up real good and then throw a couple of bushels of ground up walnut shells into it - clean it right up - right while you watch

Exclamation update

ok guys....

first off i don't drive the 560sel (88 model)

secondly when i went home from work this last time i re-created the smoking scenario by parking on an incline and letting it go in idle for about 10 minutes....sure enought billowing white smoke

the queen is driving the car in san antonio, tx and i guess when i get the update then you all will know as much as i do....i am 400 miles from the car so that's why i am posting all the time....

as far as the engine operation, it runs like a top....eats a lot of gas(comparative to my 1987 420sel with a 4.2 liter v-8)

but there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary other than this thing i have yet to solve....

You say it drinks - er sorry eats - a lot? How much? Does it use more than it should?

First, the 560 does not have a PCV valve, so I don't know what he replaced. I just had a problem like this on my 500 which is the same engine. I can't believe this problem could happen to anyone else but this is what I found.
On the drivers side, the cam oiler tube had poped up a little out of its rear most mounting hole. It was still in enought that the cam wasn't damaged as it was still getting enough oil but some oil was coming out and going up into the valve cover baffel and filling it up when the front of the engine was lower than the rear. The PCV system (not valve) could then pull some of the oil into the engine. It would smoke very bad. When I would start driving again, the oil would drain back to the back of the valve cover and all was ok.
I replaced the tube and and it hasn't done it again. The other thing that it fixed was the car would burn about a quart oil in 1000 miles. Now it doesn't burn any oil.

Suspect your valve stem seals are toast. 20 + years of heat will do it. Not an easy fix but doable with the proper tools and a search for the procedure.
