Starter question

It hasn't really become a problem for me just yet, but I was wondering why my starter on occasion will not throw the gear out, but rather just spin. Will this need to replaced? or can I take it apart and clean it? It happens more frequently in cold weather.

Probably best but more difficult is to remove the entire starter from the engine but if you need to on most starters you can remove the relay/solenoid only.

The relay/solenoid combo can be removed from the starter and cleaned and lubed, but it would be harder to then lube the gear on the starter shaft.

removing the steering dampner it makes it easier..if I'm going to take it off to clean it, I might as well take it to a shop to get refreshed..

It's gonna be a Bosch part correct? would it have a designation such as the alternators have AL###x....Wait, I just remembered I have one on the old D-jet sitting in my garage..I'll rebuild that one, then I have little or no downtime
