W126 Steering box adjust issue...

Finally got under to take a look at adjusting the ample steering wheel play I have. I found the locking bolt/nut part and can not get it to budge. Before I oil it up and work on it more I have a question on the adjusting bolt itself. I noticed its already backed out about a quarter inch, maybe a half inch. Is that normal or is it possible its already been adjusted to the extreme? Since my box has a slight leak, I am considering replacing anyway. But in the mean while I would like to get some slack out of the system.

On a side note, what a pain this is to get to!!

IIRC the factory adjustment is not meant to take loads of play out of the steering wheel, but it will remove SOME. Chances are the box will need replacement if you have a lot of play already.

Ok. I spoke with a friend who said the same. Better to replace or remove for rebuild. Maybe I will just find a junk used one and rebuild it then swap. I like rebuild projects and I learn something .

+1 on finding a good used box. Have done this on SL's and S-class cars and a reputable yard will have decent boxes ready to go at very reasonable prices. Install is a bit of a PITA unless you have access to a lift, they are heavy beasts.

Good luck.
