1> can't spin the pulley... i think the pulley is hitting ever so slightly against whatever that thing that turns is... we used to set timing marks against it.

2---It could be a failing fan clutch bearing..

I think it's the slightest beginning of a failing fan clutch bearing....

I happen to have a new one in the parts pin.... since this is a job we have to do when our cars get up there..

doesn't explain the copper shavings however

I think tomorrow, I will pull everything and put a new fan clutch bearing bracket on..... i hate that job...but happy that i have the part...

this engine only has 109k on it.....but the 300ce is mint and it's a keeper.

I guess i will keep everyone posted.... i am looking at a 3 to 3 1/2 hour job

Fan clutch bearing "bracket" all the way. When the bearing bracket usually fails you will find that the "bearing" has been pushed back all the way allowing the pulley to rub and whatever else.

Should only be a 30 minute job for fan clutch. What do think will take you 3 hours?

Put it all back together... solved the fan bearing bracket issue....

no more scraping from the fan pulley..

I guess I would have never figured there were two issues: the scraping...and another sound... well i am thinking bearings in the water pump...... no leak...and the water pump pulley isn't wobbly or anything.

i took off the belt and the engine runs with no noise....

Well, I don't have a spare water pump in the parts bin...so that kind of stinks...

now i am thinking it is not a water pump, but the camshaft position sensor...

have a rough idle....and that's the area where the copper shavings were coming from

i am going to start a new thread
