Did W140's have perch issues like the W210? I have heard of rare cases of W124 failure, but that was in the extreme midwest where anything crazy like that is par for the course.

A salesman in calgary for mercedes said it was an issue in a few cars, but rear springs having their ends breaking off was more of an issue...
He's been there a long time. He was selling 126 body cars for 5 years....

What year is yours?? I have a 95, and the epa rating is for 22 mpg. I'm averaging 24 to the US gallon, and 27-28 per Imperial gallon. Imperial gallon is bigger...

Mine was a 95, now sold. It was always close to 30 on the highway, never less than 28, which isn't all that rare a story.

Maybe they're stripping the fuel of all the good stuff up here then... almost all my driving is fairly flat, and at an average of 70 mph... Don't have a lot of heavy junk in the trunk either...

My dad had a '97 S320 LWB for a number of years. It got 24-25MPG hwy at best (US gallons). Shoot, my 2.8 liter m104 124 has never gotten 29 - but I've only had it for 100K miles, so maybe it's not broken in yet.

On a more serious note, please tell your friend to check the date code on the tires of this car. The tires are probably original, and now 16+ years old. Tire manufacturers quibble over how old is too old, but get nervous at about half that age. For safety, the tires should be replaced immediately.

I think extra metal in the Lwb might be heavier.I get 29 hwy,and 22 city.Always have. But mines a short wheelbase.

Sorry guys, I know I'm torturing you. I promise there will be pics, but my dad can't pick it up for a couple weeks. It is at his friend's house, which is a little too far for me to drive to take pics. I do have my hands on all the dealership records (and original window sticker), and it's really just a few oil changes, which were done according to time, rather than miles. It seems the original owner put most of the miles on it in the first couple of years, then garaged it (I'm assuming age or health condition must have stopped him from driving, but my dad didn't pry). His daughter inherited it and "didn't like it."
I will also be sure to post an account of the mileage he's getting when he gets that far.

Update: I'm told the car is being delivered to my place by the end of the week. The woman who sold it to my dad did have it serviced before sale. It had the oil and filter changed, brake fluid flushed, injectors cleaned, and fluids checked and topped off where needed. They did not change the transmission fluid/filter ... would you guys still recommend that? The maintenance schedule does not list a time period limit, only mileage (30,000). Also, should I do anything with the A/C before firing it up?

Great find and purchase! Congrats. I would go ahead and service the transmission and have the A/C pressures checked. Hard to say what 16 years of inactivity can do.
