windshield glue, no more gaskets?

Hello all. For my 350SDL: I am about to change my windshield due to age (20 years). When I called for a gasket, I was told it was now done by a glue. Suprise, suprise on me. Now, can I still go get a windshield replaced at my local windshield place? And, can anyone refer to a good national chain?

I would stay away from chains. You will always pay more. I just put a new windshield in my 300E a year ago. It was only $150 installed....out the door for quality glass. I called a half dozen places including some chains, and got quotes from $250-$300+.

PGW (formerly PPG) and Pilkington glass are very good quality replacements.

You might call your local Benz dealer and see if they recommend anyone.

Pretty likely whoever you talked to didn't understand what kind of car you have.

Your windshield has to be installed the same way it was installed at the factory.

There is no gasket or glue on a W126, it's held in place with thermal set tape.

If you asked any glass installer to use butyl tape, they would probably laugh in your face. There is nothing special about Benz glass. They will glue it in, just like they do to every other car.
