Oil pressure, battery and handbrake lamps do not illuminate when ignition switched on, [this lead to break down on busy road because of no battery power, alternator not working, it would seem I take great notice when a light
comes on but not when they don't] also abs light fine as also gauges

Sounds like the lamps are burnt out and need to be replaced. Pull the dashboard panel and replace all the warning lamps.

Have you replaced your alternator?
A defective voltage regulator on the alternator can create the condition you describe.
