Pre-purchase inspection checklist

The MB dealer quoted me $240 bucks to do a pre purchase inspection. Does anybody know/have the list of all the things they should check?

The car in question is an 89 300se w126.

I dont know if they would do a compression test on a gasser?

Is it a 100+ point inspection?

Somebody gives you a price, why not ask them what you get?

I want to make sure that the list that he gives me is consistent with what is supposed to be done.

What if he says its a 50 point inspection, and its supposed to be a 100 point inspection?

Actually PPI at a dealer is an interesting proposition. In my experience the dealer pretty much milks you for whatever they can get. However in a PPI if they quote high you won't buy the car and give them business, if they quote low they're not being honest and won't get the business either. Hmm....

I would go to an indie anyways

Most dealer techs (there are rare exceptions) wouldn't even know what a 126 chassis is. They've mostly been doing warranty work on cars less than 10 years old. Better off finding a trustable indie to PPI.

An independent who specializes in Mercedes products would be a much better proposition.

Agreed. There are so many things in these cars that a "current" tech / shop will not have a clue about and still sign off and give the car a clean bill of health despite being days short of some big $$$ repairs.
