Unhappy 94 s420 driveline vibration

my 94 s420 has had a driveline vibration since my purchase @ 72 k miles. new set of michelins (proper speed rated), both driveshaft cushins, trans mount, driveshaft phasing have made no change. i would describe this vibration as high frequency. it starts about 42 mph, becomes very bad near 53 mph and fades the faster you go. never been over 95mph. help!!!!!! this vehicle now has 105000 miles and problem has become NO WORSE.

Can you feel it in the steering wheel? Does the wheel shake back and forth?

Ken: Our 190 had a similiar problem. The tech replaced the driveshaft to flex disk bolts and that cured it. I don't know why but I was happy with the result as it was a low cost repair.

Unhappy 94 s420 driveline vibration

thanks to kennyandco for your responce. cushin bolts have been investigated and are o.k. this problem has stumped even the local mercedes dealer! the odd thing to me is that after 1 year and 30k the symtems and magnitude of the vibration have not changed. surely someone has traveled this same road befor. i sell used highline vehicles (northhillsauto.com) and have seen this same problem in lesser degrees.
hopefully , ken gamble

vibration

Ken;
I had a similar problem with an s420 it turned out to be the right
engine mount.
I ALSO had a 92 400SE with a vibration, it turned out to be the left halfshaft.

Since there has been no change in the amount or rate of vibration during the time owned, I would have to wonder if the previous owner had any driveshaft work done. Possible that the driveshaft wasn't marked, or may be off one or two teeth at the coupling. That would give you a vibration.

S420 vibration

I have exactly the same problem with my 95 S420. Vibration starts about 45mph. I have replaced engine mounts and now plan to replace driveshaft center bushing, bearing and flexdiscs. If you find the answer pls post it and I shall do likewise. I am told pre 95 cars have obsolete center support.

S420 vibration

Well, I have now replaced driveshaft bushing, bearing and flexdiscs with no improvement. Any feedback would be welcome.

Similar problem in 124

Have very similar sounding problem with 93 300 E 3.2 134,000. When I showed the thread to my better half, she said "that's our car!" Interestingly ours is a 124 chassis. The vibration starts at about 35 and stays until 60 MPH under light throttle pressure. It is felt mostly in the drivers seat and is at a high frequency. Cannot be felt in the steering wheel at all.

It almost feels like lock-up torque converter chatter.

Benz master tech used car for a couple of days and says it is not normal but cannot pinpoint the source. Local trans shop says they do not think it is the trans.

Replaced tires(they were due), motor mounts (at first this seemed to correct the problem), trans mount, both flex discs, rebuilt driveshaft, plugs and wires , one coil (looked old, others had been replaced), compression test OK.

Local vo-tech teacher drove it and thinks it may be an injector problem, this was without him knowing that it probably has a bad injection wire harness. Now the thought is what about an injector spraying at the wrong time due to a false signal as a result of a short? No check engine light or codes stored.

If problem is found I'll post a reply but the above is what hasn't fixed it, and this vibration is really annoying.

Two other pieces of info., the differential bushings are sloppy and the vibration does not change if you apply the parking brake. Has become slightly worse over last 13K miles.

Thanks in advance to all.

I had a similar problem on a Corvette a few years ago. Turned out to be a defective brake rotor.
For some reason, a rear rotor (replaced by the previous owner) turned out to be out of round causing the vibration.
After I replaced all U joints, both half shaft, dive shafts without any positive result, I found the cause of the problem by accident.
When I needed a brake job, the mechanic found the the rotor was totally out of round on his disk turning machine" replaced the rotor and everthing came out smooth . A long shot, but it worked for me.

I had a similar problem on my 95 S320 and it turned out to be a rear wheel alignment problem. I was also experiencing bad tire wear on the inside of the rear tires.

FYI, reference the vibration in the 93' 300E 124 chassis. Changed the engine wire harness, very marginal improvement if any.

This is not the source of the vibration; however, the condition of the harness was very bad.

Mercedes Benz should initiate a recall on these, this is by far the worst harness I have ever seen. There is obviously a problem with the insulation and Benz should make good on them voluntarily.

try this fix for smoother ride

I had this problem in my 1997 S320 and after replacing all the things discussed in the earlier post I replaced all four rims. Problem was fixed and never returned I was told that the aluminum alloy rims have a tendency to bend over time this creates a problem with stability.
