SL shift knob removal

Hi Bob. I don't see many SLs around here at the yards, so I will spell out some steps for a W123. They both have similar shifter boxes. Perhaps the same console cover steps as well.
Your goal is to remove the center console cover. Yours may be black with switches or zebrano.
Anyway, on a W123 you have to remove the ash tray. Remove the two Philips screws on the ash tray bracket. Pull the bracket out. Then you can slide the console cover to the rear. Do this with caution and do not lift the cover from the console yet. If yours is still there, there is probably a plastic horizontal peg securing the rear portion of the cover to the console. Be sure to slide the cover straight back first to clear this peg from it's hole. Then lift the cover from the console.
Remove only the bolts that secure the tranny box to the center hump.
Lift the box up and lay over as much as you can to locate a nut at the base of the shifter shaft. You may have to hold the rubber boot up to view this nut. Loosen the nut. Then grab the shifter knob and unscrew the shifter shaft from the tranny connection.

No need to make it that complicated...

Just slide down the rubber sleeve along the lever shaft to access the 14mm bolt that tightens the otherwise screw on affair.
