88 300e sputtering hard start on wet days

I have an 88 300e. The car runs fine on days when it is dry. We have had rain for the last couple of days and the car has been hard to start and runs rough. It hesitates on take off and an acceleration. Any suggestion? The distributor cap rotor wires plugs and fuel filter are less that 6 months old. This is getting on my nerves.

Water is probably leaking on top of the OVP. Look at the cover, if you are missing it, or its cracked in anyway, rain will drop right smack on top of it.

I would replace OVP either way, and then ensure no water is gettin on it.

Thanks! I will check this out. Can the car run without the OVP?

Yes, but poorly -- it provides power to the CIS-E system. That is why the car would run badly if its giving a finiky connection.

ALL OVP's go bad, its fact, but its there to protect the rest of the electrical components in the system that are much more expensive. Its just a matter of time til they cause issues unfortunately. Best course is to be proactive and a spare is good to have in the trunk just in case regardless. They are about $50.

Thanks for the information. Can you send me the link to your forum again. I need to replace my fuel gauge unit and need instructions.

Is the replacement of the 02 sensor difficult. My gas mileage has gone to crap. Think the original 02 sensor may be on the car.

You can open the hood and check the ignition, best when it is dark.
Some cables and caps only last a couple of months. I had beru's that lasted only 4 months, replaced with Bosch.

Did you check or replace the distributor cap seal? If perished or broken it can allow moisture to form inside the cap.

Especially in wet or humid weather. Take the cap off next time it does it and wipe it out.

Probably one of the easiest jobs I've done on my 300TE. Get the universal sensor and splice on the original connectors. Only $35 at NAPA.

Make sure if you splice in the right connector and you check the heater works since both wires are white and there IS a correct orientation. If you reverse the PWR and GND the heater element will not work and you'll have no power and terrible fuel econ.
