1991 300e W124 front power seat control issue

My front power seat adjusts on its own. When it is doing this, I cannot control movements with the switch. It seems to move all of the adjustments sporadically. Again, when this starts happening, the door controls are inoperative. As soon as the sporadic movements stop, the door controls work.
The last time it was doing this, I thought that I started smelling that electrical smell coming from the center console near the radio. Does the wire loom from the power seat go thought the center console? I thought it went under the driver's floor pad.
The last few times, the problem starts with me accelerating from a stop.

It's embarrassing to say, but I'm at a loss as to the proper diagnostic procedure to take.
So far I've taken off the door panel, removed the lower kick panel under the steering wheel, and started disassembling the center console ( I'm going to take out the radio for repair. It worked when I bought the car 5 months ago, but won't turn on now).
The door switch doesn't stick in any way that I can tell.

Are there obvious areas to look at? What to look at first?
Any help is welcome and appreciated.
Thanks.
