license plate lights don't work

So the license plate lights in my 400E don't work. bulbs are new, housings are new, connectors are new, fuse is new, light relay is new {used} wiring looks good in the trunk lid, I think water got in the trunk lid and shorted something?

I tested them with a meter first off power is lots some where in the trunk lid. I wouldn't say looking at wires tells you ZERO. If a wire is fraid or crack it can tell you a lot.

Inspect the wiring loom where it enters the trunk hinge on the drivers side. There may be broken wires in there. My trunk light stopped working and there was damage to the wires from the constant opening and closing of the trunk.

My trunk light works (so the wires to the switch are good) but the 300E has never had working license plate lamps....never really put much effort into checking why. I will someday....
