monowiper removal questions

I'm trying to get at the blower motor on my '93 190E. I've done the search, and I've reaped the various threads and articles on the subject. However it doesn't seem that any of them correspond to my car. I've got the latest model W201, which is different.

At the end of the linkage mechanism, on the driver's side underneath the windshield, lies the motor/transmission for the wiper system. The motor is kind of large, with a black plastic housing, mounted horizontally. All of the threads and pictorials I have seen show the motor mounted vertically on the passenger side. Every time I try to do something, it seems as though my car is different from every other out there. It's extremely frustrating.

Can anyone tell me - what do I have to do to get this wiper mechanism out of the car? I have the FSM and it is useless. Should I unbolt the mechanism from the motor/transmission assembly and then remove it, or should the complete system (wiper gearbox/linkage/motor/transmission) be removed all at the same time? I've removed everything I need to, except the three 10mm bolts that secure the linkage to the motor/transmission. The motor is preventing me from removing the unit from the car. There's just not enough room. I don't want to separate the linkage from the motor for fear of losing correct alignment. Somebody with some experience with this car? It's different.

Also related, along the bottom edge of the windshield I can see what seems to be a type of black RTV like sealant applied to the floppy rubber boot underneath the wiper gearbox, presumably there to seal water out where the rotating clamshell gearbox assembly meets the glass. Is this factory? The windshield I think has been replaced at some point, because it's a PPG. Do I need to use sealant at this location upon reassembly? Everything I've read makes no mention of this.

I don't know anything about 201's, but I've gotten to the blower motors on my other MB's are on the interior side of the firewall, and I'd be surprised if yours is different. Mine are passenger side, accessible by removing panelling underneath glovebox on passenger side. From outside the car you should be able to see how the air gets to it. It should also be downwind from the cabin filters. Are your cabin filters in the engine compartment somewhere?
