speedomoter/odo stops working

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. 1989 300ce.... speedo/odo stops

I searched for answers but the forums seems confusing for this one.

All other gauges work... fuses are fine.

Is there a cable that hooks to a sensor?

thanks

Speedometer is cable driven. You may want to remove the cluster and check the connection between the cluster and transmission.

The 124s, like the 201 are cable driven. Your cable has likely kinked, snapped or broke.

Removing the cluster without undoing the speedometer cable can cause the cable to break/shear/kink/etc.

Its best to disconnect the cable from the transmission and feed up some slack to the cluster area. After you've done this, then you can remove the cluster.

That was the case on my 190E at least. My speedometer and odometer were actually working but the speedometer would bounce and the cruise control wouldn't engage.

Once I replaced the cable, the speedometer was solid. Cruise was another matter as I had to rebuilt the amplifier.

In order to replace that part you have to disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission end:

That part is the drive gear which spins the cable:

I'm not sure how easy/difficult that is to replace.

You have to pull off the rear cover of the transmission. I suggest you leave it alone.

Its unlikely the problem is that gear.

A replacement speedometer cable is only around $45 or so. Its much easier to replace than that drive gear.

Now, other than the cable, something in your speedometer head actually be broken and not translating the mechanical signal from the cable to the needle/odo.
