alternator problem /engine grounding
My alternator is overcharging my batteries intermittently. I could measure a peak of 16V on short durationss but most of the time it's charging OK at around 14.5V. I'm not sure if the alternator is already faulty but I have doubts. Could a bad engine grounding cause this unstable voltage? I can't seem to locate the grounding cable from the engine to the chassis although the negative terminal of the battery is well grounded to the chassis. Could this be the problem?

Does your starter work OK? if so - ground is probably good. For the cost (I believe I heard $15.00 on another thread) I would replace the regulator-brush pak on your alternator. It is likely that is what is bad. Get a hold of Phil at Parts Shop - he has them.

Overcharging
I agree with Moedip.The problem is most likely in the regulator/brush assy.The ground should be on the bell housing, and if it were loose,you would probably have flickering lights.
